Another benefit, of course would be that the revenue raised could be enough to allow you to reduce all tax on savings and investments – although I know you have a problem with freeing up the stockmarket stuff – so just savings then for the ordinary people so they think you’re doing them a favour. And we all know that if people have savings then we can make them pay for their own NHS treatment and care if something other than obesity causes them a problem in later years.

So what do you reckon? There is a lot more evidence to back this up – I just scratched the surface here – but I just wanted you to know what I was thinking. I’ve told Iris to enrol for WeightWatchers – I guess they’ll get busy, and I’ve asked my broker to research all the health club stocks to see what might be worth buying.

Oh, one more thing, I’ve sent a note to David about my idea and he’s all for it. If you don’t last the year then he says he’ll make it a manifesto issue.
