Brethren Valley

For the valley had existed for all time. Lush and green and a harvest for the herbivores to live out their lives in luxury and to die in peace.
The carnivores never killed, they would merely eat the dead flesh of their fallen brethren and prayed for their dear departed souls.
All was in harmony.
Until now.
Brother wolf ‘s spine chilled, the fur on his back bristled, as he looked sullen and asked brother rabbit “What shall we do?”

Brother rabbit stood up on his hind paws, standing tall and addressed all of the animals in the valley, as his eyes began to tear. And solemn were his words:
“Friends! Ye oxen and cow, ye wolf and wolverine, ye deer and bear, owl and fox and eagle.”
“Aye kitty and dog!”
“Pray for our souls, for we all shall be dead in a fortnight.”
And so it happened. The carnivores broke the rule and used their teeth for once. In hunger they slaughtered all the herbivores.
And after gorging on their final meal. They lay down to rest in the lush grass crying to themselves, to slowly die in Brethren Valley.

Epilogue
Jane doe had made it. She had scrambled for days up the incline of the valley and was now on level ground.
Freedom!
She made her way to the west, but something felt strange under her hooves? Not dirt? Not sand nor rocks? It was hard…
The bullet entered her neck from the east. Cleanly passing through her neck and jugular.
Jane Doe stumbled some and then collapsed on the asphalt highway bleeding.
And clearly dying she prayed to be with her souls in Brethren Valley.
